Description
Flute body is made of Bird’s Eye Maple, accented with Cocobolo Mouth Piece and Foot End. Flute body is inlaid with Cocobolo Wood design symbolizing the spirit/seed/spark of creativity (represented by an inlaid Turquoise Dot surrounded by Cocobolo stylized flame), which is birthed with your breath through the belly of the flute, where it grows and takes form of an unusual flower which goes to seed (represented by inlaid crushed Citrine Quartz) and the seeds of sound that spark creativity and spiritual growth in those who hear one play this flute. Semi precious stones used for inlay are Turquoise and Chrysocolla, as well as Citrine Quartz.
The 1 and 5/8th inch thick cherry slab has been harvested from a fallen cherry tree by me on the land where I live, sliced and air dried over a period of 2 years. The slab that became the base has an amazing grain and pattern, its sides are naturally and artistically carved by a bark beetle, which adds one of a kind fractal pattern. The naturally occurring cracks in the slab are inlaid with Chrysocolla stone and secured with a butterfly inlay of Sapele Wood. The top and bottom flute holders that you see attached to the base via mortise and tenon are also carved out of cherry and lined with soft leather. The top flute holder is stitched through with waxed thick cotton twine, and the stitch holds a rolled leather cord, creating a strong yet soft grip for the flute, adding an unexpected and pleasant to look at touch of wood, sewn through with waxed cotton twine. The bottom flute holder, as you can see in the picture, has a trail carved by a wood boring beetle, which was left intentionally. The Drone Flute and the base are finished with lacquer.
The base is designed to be hanged on a wall via a bent brass rod inlaid into the back of the slab – find a stud in the wall, put a screw into it and you’re ready to hang the base onto it just like you would a painting. Flute is tuned to the Key of E and has an absolutely clear, perfect sound, response and sensitivity to low and high air pressure.
It is truly a professional musical instrument as well as a piece of art. The well know Pentatonic 6 hole flute scale has been extended by an edition of a 7th hole on the back of the drone for your thumb. The Scale thus is as follows:
Fundamental Note All holes closed – Note E
1st from bottom of the flute open the rest closed – G
2nd hole open – A
3rd hole closed 4th hole open – C
4th hole closed 5th hole open – D
6th hole open – E
7th thumb hole open – F
Largest hole diameter is 3/8th of an inch.
I want to point your attention to the fact, that this flute will never be reproduced and will always stay as a one of a kind Functional Sculpture piece.
